Custom Platform

What any platform must provide to run the control plane.

The control plane runs on any platform that gives each instance the following.

Requirements

  • Its own persistent disk. Local or block storage that survives restarts and supports fsync, mounted at depot.log_directory. Never share one disk between instances, and never use a network file system such as NFS or EFS.
  • A stable private address that the other instances can reach on port 6421. Set it as api_peer.advertise_address.
  • Access to one object storage bucket, shared by every instance.
  • The same pinned version of rivetdev/engine on every instance, started with --config.
  • A load balancer on port 6420 with a one hour idle timeout. See Ports.

Run at least three instances in production, each on its own machine. Start them within a minute of each other so the first storage placement uses all of them.

Point every instance at the same bucket with object_storage.primary, as described in Storage.
